The Likes of Us

AMOS are delighted to announce that we have been given permission by The Really Useful Group to be the very first amateur society in Hampshire to perform The Likes of Us.

The Likes of Us was the first collaboration between award-winning composers Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The relationship began when a 17-year-old Lloyd Webber received a letter from then 21-year-old Rice offering himself as a “with-it writer”. And there a winning partnership was born.

Written in 1965, The Likes of Us is a musical that has existed for 45 years hidden away from view, now finally coming out from the mist of time and chimneys. Oliver-esque in style, this family musical tells the touching story of Dr. Thomas Barnardo and features some of the most tuneful, witty and moving songs ever written by Lloyd Webber and Rice"

After writing The Likes of Us, Rice and Lloyd Webber moved onto global hits such as Joseph, Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar with which they had resounding success. However, The Likes of Us was never forgotten and now with the approval of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber it has been launched by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) and the Really Useful Group (RUG) to amateur theatre prior to its professional release and eventual appearance in the West End.

Not only is this a brave and ground-breaking move, but an exciting one for anyone involved in theatre as it is very rare that amateur societys have the opportunity to perform shows written by these musical greats!

Review - Southern Daily Echo

"WHEN you come out of a Lloyd Webber-Rice musical, singing Have Another Cup of Tea then you can perhaps understand why their first collaboration has rarely been performed.

Carol Robinson deserves praise for choosing this show to mark her directorial debut – and making a success of it.

The story (short at a little over ninety minutes) of how Dr Barnardo set up his first refuge for London’s homeless children has few strong songs, although the cast performed admirably throughout.

Paul Marsh, excellent as Barnardo, was perfectly complemented by Ann Sinclair as Syrie.

Narrator John Parker linked the scenes with style and there were notable performances by a feisty Linda Bagnall (Rose) and Heidi Hodgkinson, a jewel in the cast as Jenny, but the children nearly stole the show.

With a flexible set and great costumes, music from Neil Streeter and his trio, the show looked and sounded good throughout."
