HOW WE BUILT PRISCILLA...
With the challenge of a small theatre with difficult access, narrow doors and hallways, no wing space and a limited budget, hiring a set in for our production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert was simply not an option for us, so I embarked on a journey to build our very own bus...Our ‘Priscilla’ was designed and built by us, completely from scratch, and over 600 hours have gone into her construction.
Creating a bus from scratch is no mean feat: Where do you start? What makes a bus, a bus? Money, space and time restrictions (not to mention transportation and the size of the stage-door) meant we couldn't actually have a real bus or an 'ready to hire' solution. So what elements do you need to give the impression of a bus? And possibly more importantly, what can you miss out?
Priscilla is a sizable lady, and needs room to breathe, so we took the bold decision to not have any fixed set for this musical (walls, platforms, etc.) This has given us more freedom to move and rearrange the elements of the set as we wish for any scene… that certainly gives the stage crew a lot to think about. We love our colourful, glittery and flamboyantly crazy version of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert and hope you do too...
